Yverdon, View to the Castle from the Lakeside. 17.05.2026

This original plein-air oil painting was created in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland, from the lakeside view looking toward the historic Yverdon Castle. Painted directly on location, the work captures the quiet atmosphere of the town, where medieval architecture meets the changing light of the water and sky.

Yverdon-les-Bains is situated between Lake Neuchâtel and the landscapes of Northern Vaud. At the heart of the town stands the Château d’Yverdon, a medieval castle originally commissioned by Peter of Savoy in the 13th century and today one of the most recognizable historical landmarks of the region. (Tourisme Nord vaudois)

On this spring day, the reflections of light from the lakeside softened the stone forms of the castle, creating a dialogue between architecture, water and atmosphere. Working outdoors allowed me to respond directly to these subtle changes of colour and light as they unfolded throughout the painting session.

This work is part of my ongoing plein-air painting practice across Switzerland, dedicated to places where landscape, history and everyday life quietly intersect. Rather than depicting a monument alone, the painting seeks to preserve the feeling of being present in Yverdon at a specific moment in time.
